The Passage · ESV

vv. 1–3 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel. vv. 4–7 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. vv. 8–9 Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Part One

Unity in the Church

vv. 1–3

Paul opens with the weight of everything he has said: therefore — stand ¹ in the Lord. Not in your own resolve — in Him.

Paul names Euodia and Syntyche publicly — their conflict was known, serious, and affecting the whole ². There was one church in Philippi — nowhere else to go.

He does not take sides. He tells both: agree in the ³. Let Him be the common ground — not the argument.

"Getting involved to bring peace is not overstepping — it is modeled for us. A lack of unity affects the whole church. It is everyone's business."

Part Two

Rejoicing and Peace in the Lord

vv. 4–7

"Rejoice in the Lord always." Paul says it ⁴ — again I will say, rejoice. The reason it is possible always: the Lord is ⁵.

The answer to anxiety is not the absence of problems — it is ⁶. Bring everything to God — with thanksgiving. Thank Him that He is in control. Ask Him.

"The peace of God will guard your hearts and minds. Not the removal of the thing that threatens you — the peace that holds you while it is still there."

Part Three

Fixing Our Minds on What Is from God

vv. 8–9

The enemies of the cross had minds set on earthly things. The citizen of heaven fixes their mind on what is ⁷, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable.

What you feed your mind shapes the person you become. When you feel conviction — is this pure? Is this true? — that is the Spirit. The person who stands firm does not argue with that conviction. They ⁸ on it.

"Practice these things — and the God of peace will be with you. Not just His gift of peace. Him."

Conclusion

Stand firm in Him.

Unity. Rejoicing. A guarded mind. These are not three disconnected commands — they are what it looks like for a people who belong to Christ to live together in the middle of a world that is trying to pull them apart.

If you are in Christ — this is your portion. Stand firm in Him. He is the one holding you. And if you are not — the God of peace is available. Not after you clean up your life. Now. Repent and believe.

Prayer
