Micah 2:6–7 ‘Do not preach’—thus they preach—‘one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.’ Should this be said, O house of Jacob? Has the LORD grown impatient? Are these his deeds? Do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly? Micah 2:8–11 But lately my people have risen up as an enemy; you strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly with no thought of war. The women of my people you drive out from their delightful houses; from their young children you take away my splendor forever. Arise and go, for this is no place to rest, because of uncleanness that destroys with a grievous destruction. If a man should go about and utter wind and lies, saying, ‘I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,’ he would be the preacher for this people! Micah 2:12–13 I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob; I will gather the remnant of Israel; I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture, a noisy multitude of men. He who opens the breach goes up before them; they break through and go out by the gate, and this is the one who leads them out, their king passes on before them, the LORD at their head.

Part One

Persecuting the Prophet

Micah 2:6–7

“Do not preach,” thus they preach. Israel’s posture: leave us alone, stop talking, disgrace will not touch us.

Other teachers reinforced their false confidence. Removal from the land felt impossible for a people so secure in God.

Confronted with sin, the instinct is not ¹. It is questioning who God even is.

Doubting God’s ² is easier than admitting our own sin.

Micah’s answer: do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly? Judgment on the rebellious is only bad news if you are rebellious.

Reflect · Don’t tell God to stop speaking. Where has conviction felt like something to silence rather than an invitation to believe Him?

Part Two

Oppressing the Poor

Micah 2:8–11

Lately my people have risen up as an enemy. God’s own covenant people become a ³ to the very people they should protect.

They rob trusting neighbors who pass by with no thought of war. Women and children are driven from their homes.

The children are stripped of the ⁴ that should have come to them. Last week’s coveting has evolved into oppression.

The progression: covet, scheme, seize, displace, destroy an inheritance. Sin progresses.

A divine ⁵: just as they drove families out, God drives them out. Arise and go, for this is no place to rest.

They did not want no prophet. They wanted a different prophet. So God grants them a ⁶ promising wine, ease, and pleasure.

Refusing to listen to God does not stop Him.

Reflect · Watch for preachers who only please your ears. Does the preaching you seek ever confront your sin, or only comfort it?

Part Three

A Shepherd King One Day

Micah 2:12–13

God promises to assemble all of Jacob and gather the ⁷: those preserved by grace, faithful when the majority falls away.

Exile, destruction, and pain are ahead, but God’s people are not without hope. His plan is not a small plan.

You cannot save yourself. But God can, and He saves to Himself a multitude.

He who opens the breach, goes up before them, and leads them out: a preview of ⁸, the King who leads His people out of captivity.

Judgment is never God’s last word for those who turn to Him.

Conclusion

Even after punishing a rebellious people, God still promises one day to gather them together.

When He calls, do not say what the Israelites said. Heed the Lord and turn from your sin, and do not look for messengers who just tell you what you want to hear.

If you want to serve God, then believe in Him and ask Him to save you. The King who breaks down prison walls will break yours down for you.
